Movies ‘08

So, I made a list of the movies that I have seen that came out in 2008, I am sure I am missing a couple of movies, and I know there are movies that I should have seen but ended up never seeing and there are movies on there that I have seen 2 or 3 times this year.  I don’t think I am going to post the complete list (mostly because I don’t want everyone knowing I saw Sex and the City).  I thought I would make a list of my favorite movies of the past year.  I think I will break it down by Genre. *Warning* I am willing to physically or verbally fight with anyone not agreeing with me.

I think the best Genre of the year has to be comedy.  I am sure there were a lot of awful comedies out there this year but the good ones were great. It is pretty sad when a Beloved Kevin Smith comedy which for many years has been the bright spot to a comedy-less year that is based on making an adult film to make money is at the bottom of the best comedies of 2008 list.

1. Role Models – I saw this one twice.  Paul Rudd and Sean William Scott are great in this film.  I was leery going into this film with Mclovin and Stiffler in major roles, but they were great. Even the sappy ending of the movie where things have to end up being feel good that every American comedy has was great.

2. Forgetting Sarah Marshall – “You sound like you’re from London” again said by Paul Rudd pretty much was repeated at our house for about two months this fall.

3. Step Brothers – You can pretty much quote any line from this movie and it will be hilarious.  Will Ferrell and John C. Reily spend 90 minutes trying to one up each other and amping it up more and more.

T – 4.  Pineapple Express - This movie is worth the list just for the last 5 minutes when Seth Rogan, James Franco, and Danny McBride are sitting in the diner recapping the night.

T -4. Tropic Thunder – Obviously Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. were great.  Jack Black actually lacked a little bit.  The supporting cast carried this movie with some likely and unlikely people making this movie great. Thanks Tom Cruise, Matthew McConaughy, Jay Baruchel, and Danny McBride.

6. Zach and Miri Make a Porno – Kevin Smith makes movies I love that is all.

Next Genre Drama

1.  The Visitor – Richard Jenkins was really good in this movie and ended the way that it should have ended.  Sometimes you love a movie and then it ends with everything happening perfectly this one however ended the right way.

2. The Wrestler – As good as I had hoped, this was one of my most anticipated films of the year and didn’t disappoint.  Another great ending, they weren’t lying, Mickey Rourke was great in this one.

3. Slumdog Millionaire – Great movie, could have been my favorite movie but I just couldn’t agree with everyone else.  Everyone should see this movie.

4. Seven Pounds – I don’t care who didn’t like this movie.  But I like Will Smith and he always makes movies that I like.  The only movie in a very long time that actually made me tear up a little bit.

5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -  Great long movie.  I still think there should have been someone else playing Benjamin than Brad Pitt.  He has looked the same for the past 20 years and for a movie about someone throughout there entire life I couldn’t tell if he was 50 or 25.

Action Movies, this was the year of remakes and sequels.

1. The Dark Knight – Most anticipated film of the year even before the whole Heath Ledger thing.  It lived up to all expectations, and I am pretty sure everyone else in the United States Agrees.

2. Iron Man – Although this was not a remake it kind of marked a comeback of RDJ.  I was pleasantly surprised with this movie and think so were so many others.  Hopefully the sequel can live up.

3. 007 – Quantum of Solace – I like Daniel Craig as James Bond.  I don’t care what anyone says about that.  He is edgier and I like that he uses things around him to defeat his foes.  The only fault with this movie was the shaky camera for the action sequences.

I don’t watch horror films so there is nothing there at all.

Romantic Comedies.  I don’t know what my deal is but I like these movies.

1. Four Christmases -  Vince Vaughn comes back and does a good job in a movie again.  All the kids are named after the city they were conceived in.  I love it.

2. 27 Dresses - I like Katherine Heigel.  Maybe she will be my girlfriend.

Best Documentary

1.  Man On Wire - By far the best documentary this year.  It was very suspenseful and although a documentary made 30 years later I found myself on the edge of my seat for the whole movie.

HONORABLE MENTION

These are movies that were good but just didn’t make the cut for me.

The Band’s Visit, The Express, Get Smart, Gran Torino, The Happening, The Incredible Hulk, Son of Rambow, Sex Drive, The Wackness, and WallE.
